Package: gnome-core Version: 1:42+1 X-Debbugs-CC: debian-gtk-gn...@lists.debian.org
I propose 2 changes to the gnome-core metapackage: 1. Install gnome-text-editor by default but allow gedit as an alternate for now. https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/meta-gnome3/-/merge_requests/6 - GNOME 42 has gnome-text-editor as the only text editor in their core set. - Fedora 36 has switched their default from gnome-text-editor to gedit too. - Maybe after the Bookworm release, we'd drop the alternate too. 2. Allow gnome-console as an alternative to gnome-terminal but keep gnome-terminal as the default terminal for now. - We still have some integration work to do for GNOME Console to be a reasonable drop-in replacement on Debian. + It should be an x-terminal-emulator alternative https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/console/-/issues/26 + New tabs should open with the same working directory as the current tab. Works on Fedora; needs something else to work on Debian. - GNOME 42 did switch their core set to have gnome-console as the only terminal in the core set, but glib hasn't been updated to fully support that. (We will be updating our glib soon to distro patch that.) - Fedora 36 kept GNOME Terminal as default. I think their hesitation would mostly be resolved once Console adds a preferences dialog with popular customizations. So there's a chance that Console would be more "competitive" for GNOME 43 so this is something to be thinking about for a late default switch for Bookworm. https://pagure.io/fedora-workstation/issue/261 Final note: our metapackages should probably be redone to more closely match GNOME's upstream metapackages. I suggest this be worked on at DebConf in a few months. Thank you, Jeremy Bicha
