The locale is [EMAIL PROTECTED] (through the LANG variable).

The user isn't using much the software much, and it's quite difficult to
discuss it with her. What I'm sure of is:
      * the error message was something brought up by a lower software
        layer;
      * the text wasn't converted to UTF-8 before being passed to pango,
        leading to the output being truncated at the first latin1
        character;
      * it has been possible to get the software to work at least once.

As such, the only bug I'm sure that exists is the missing conversion of
the error string to UTF-8, so that the error message can be readable
when using a non-UTF8 locale.
