I used your FIXME and TODO comments to put the instructions from the man page
into a finished script:

Mainly there are now no temporary files anymore and everything works in a
single shell pipeline.

I'm afraid that this will not work on architectures other than amd64 and i386
for the reasons given in the comments at the top of the script.

I've put this into the examples directory for now. I'm not sure whether I want
to make this into a script that can be put into PATH and which would then also
need options to set the image size and distribution.
