First of all, this has nothing to do with defoma. The question is whether file permisions of font files are managed by debconf, or manually by the local administrator. Normally it is advisable to leave the permission managament to debconf, which will lead to a sane compromise between usability and security. However, it won't work on buildds, and this is why we wrote that it is "required for building...". I didn't want to use the word buildd, since an ordinary user probably doesn't know what that is. But you are right - it's not really clear. > I see the description is already pretty long, but maybe you could add > a pointer to the appropriate discussion in > /usr/share/doc/tex-common/Debian-TeX-Policy.*. Currently, this is not handled by the Policy. This is the relevant part of the current templates text: If you accept, font generation will only work for users that have been added to the group you chose - this has to be done manually by you! . The default is not to manage permissions with debconf, but this is just because this is required for building other Debian packages. In almost every other setup, like desktop machines or multi-user servers, accepting this (and adding users to the group) is strongly recommended! I just noticed that we should make clear that on desktop machines used by a single user, it's easier - just use the group of that user. Now what about the buildds? For example: ... but this is just because it is required for automatic installs on Debian package building machines. In almost every other setup... What do you think?
