I have the same hard drive family and have been having the same problem as described in this bug report.
Here's the entire (non-commented) contents of my /etc/smartd.conf: /dev/sda -d ata -a -o on -S on -s (S/../.././02|L/../../6/03) /dev/sdb -d ata -a -o on -S on -s (S/../.././02|L/../../6/03) Here's what I get when I do an upgrade: Setting up smartmontools (5.36-4) ...
