I have the same hard drive family and have been having the same problem as
described in this bug report.

Here's the entire (non-commented) contents of my /etc/smartd.conf:

  /dev/sda -d ata -a -o on -S on -s (S/../.././02|L/../../6/03)
  /dev/sdb -d ata -a -o on -S on -s (S/../.././02|L/../../6/03)

Here's what I get when I do an upgrade:

  Setting up smartmontools (5.36-4) ...
Enabling S.M.A.R.T. for: /dev/sdaunable to fetch IEC (SMART) mode page
[unsupported field in scsi command]
(failed) /dev/sdbunable to fetch IEC (SMART) mode page [unsupported field in
scsi command]
  (failed).
  Starting S.M.A.R.T. daemon: smartd (failed)
invoke-rc.d: initscript smartmontools, action "start" failed.
  dpkg: error processing smartmontools (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
