Howdy,
While I understand the thought process, I wouldn't be too inclined to do so as
doing so would imply some form of guarantee that it's binary compatible with all
options an application or user may use. Also, to use the provides, it'd also
have to work when something did 'import youtube_dl' which further complicates
things.
You mention mpv, in unstable that supports yt-dlp and I poked the team member
taking care of it, so it's already in the alternate recommends at least. As for
SMPlayer, looks like the latest version[0] supports yt-dlp so that should help
there as well.
Thanks!

Dear Maintainer,
Some applications using youtube-dl do not support yet yt-dlp. That is
the case, for example, of SMPlayer in Debian Testing/Sid and Stable, and
of mpv in Debian Stable. A convenience package similar to, say,
python-is-python3, providing a symlink to point /usr/bin/youtube-dl to
/usr/bin/yt-dlp, might come in handy. Is it something you might consider
preparing?
Cheers
