Hello,
I disagree with the removal of movemail support in v91. I noticed it
when upgrading Thunderbird in Stretch from 1:78.14.0-1~deb9u1 to
1:91.4.1-1~deb9u1: all my emails have disappeared without warning, and,
after a downgrade, Thunderbird would refuse to work with the account
touched by the newer version, requiring a manual intervention to save my
emails.
Clearly such a massive degradation of functionality cannot be pushed as
a "security update", and IMHO does not follow the Unix spirit either, to
be given a home in Debian. The developers are simmering in their own
pot, but they need to hear feedback from users sometimes. Now this
feedback is suppressed by a collective Debian middleman, accepting
upstream changes and force-feeding them to the Debian fans.
I use the fetchmail tool for fetching my emails. It can be rapidly
invoked from a script or a key combination, without having to launch a
rather slow Thunderbird every time, when it is not known if there is new
mail coming. This also integrates important emails created by various
local system processes, such as installers.
Best regards,
Vladimir
