It's not "beta". I don't know where you picked up that tag. Version 0.8.5-test3 just is the third 0.8.5 release candidate and is far more stable than 0.8.4. It's not about being bleeding edge, it's about having less bugs. As for why 0.8.4 is not in etch, it's imply because it had too many release-critical bugs (that are now fixed in 0.8.5-test3) and was automatically removed from testing. Feel free to report any real issues (bugs, missing features, regressions) you may have with the version currently in sid.
