Upstream has responded at https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups/issues/282 and asked Would you mind applying the patch and telling me whether it helps with your issue? Applying patches and rebuilding is not in my skill set. Can you help out here, Martin? Thorsten? Cheers, Brian.
