It was more of a hand-wave :) "In theory" what you suggest is preferable. "In practice" we also found that having (technically unneccessary) "diffs" again upstream has its own set of issues, so we tolerate it. In short, we have bigger issues to solve and the "80/20" rule holds. We're better off having you package Date, and having it in Debian, and having other things rounded off, than chasing these small imperfections. At least that what I think after 25 years here :) But there are so many of us that someone will possibly say the opposite.
