Package: src:linux Version: 5.10.70-1 Severity: minor Starting with inux-image-5.10.0-9-amd64, the ite_cir kernel module appears to massively flood (approximately 80 log entries per second) syslog with messages stating that a receive overflow has occurred:
/../ Oct 10 19:31:39 glimmer kernel: [ 3.758499] rc rc0: ITE8708 CIR transceiver as /devices/virtual/rc/rc0 Oct 10 19:31:39 glimmer kernel: [ 3.758557] rc rc0: lirc_dev: driver ite-cir registered at minor = 0, raw IR receiver, raw IR transmitter Oct 10 19:31:39 glimmer kernel: [ 3.758619] input: ITE8708 CIR transceiver as /devices/virtual/rc/rc0/input3 Oct 10 19:31:39 glimmer kernel: [ 3.760191] ite_cir: driver has been successfully loaded /../ Oct 10 20:42:51 glimmer kernel: [ 4276.187105] rc rc0: receive overflow Oct 10 20:42:51 glimmer kernel: [ 4276.195016] rc rc0: receive overflow /../ (repeated receive overflow messages) This always occurs first after the system has been running for some time (approximately 1½ hours). The logging of this condition appears to have been added to the source code earlier this year: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20210510102009.237644...@linuxfoundation.org/ It appears from the source code that some kind of reset is attempted, however the outcome of this is unknown (and apparently does not succeed and/or solve the receive overflow condition). The machine in question is located in a closet with no known IR sending from other devices. There are no known applications running that are using the input device (/devices/virtual/rc/rc0/input3). Output from lsmod shows the following: root@glimmer:~# lsmod | grep -Ei '(ir_|_ir|rc_|_rc|ite)' | grep -v crc ir_rc6_decoder 20480 0 rc_rc6_mce 16384 0 ite_cir 32768 0 rc_core 61440 4 ite_cir,ir_rc6_decoder,rc_rc6_mce Possible work-arounds include blacklisting the ite_cir module (e.g. in /etc/modprobe.d/local.conf): blacklist ite_cir ...which would then disable the IR functionality altogether, or to temporarily discard the log messages (e.g. in /etc/rsyslog.d/local.conf): if $syslogfacility-text == 'kern' and $programname == 'kernel' and re_match($msg, '\\] rc rc[^:]+: receive overflow$') and $syslogseverity >= 4 then stop However this does not solve the underlying problem. I understand that the problem could potentially be because of "iffy" hardware, but still wanted to report this, e.g. in case many others are seeing the same thing on their systems. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 5.10.0-9-amd64 (debian-ker...@lists.debian.org) (gcc-10 (Debian 10.2.1-6) 10.2.1 20210110, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.35.2) #1 SMP Debian 5.10.70-1 (2021-09-30) ** Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-5.10.0-9-amd64 root=/dev/mapper/glimmer--vg-root ro quiet ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: Unable to read kernel log; any relevant messages should be attached ** Model information sys_vendor: Intel Corporation product_name: NUC7i3BNK product_version: J31188-313 chassis_vendor: Intel Corporation chassis_version: 2 bios_vendor: Intel Corp. bios_version: BNKBL357.86A.0066.2018.0724.1832 board_vendor: Intel Corporation board_name: NUC7i3BNB board_version: J22859-313 ** Loaded modules: ccm md4 sha512_ssse3 sha512_generic cmac nls_utf8 cifs dns_resolver fscache libdes intel_rapl_msr intel_rapl_common snd_hda_codec_hdmi snd_hda_codec_realtek snd_hda_codec_generic ledtrig_audio btusb btrtl btbcm btintel x86_pkg_temp_thermal intel_powerclamp bluetooth coretemp snd_soc_skl snd_soc_hdac_hda snd_hda_ext_core kvm_intel snd_soc_sst_ipc mei_hdcp snd_soc_sst_dsp kvm jitterentropy_rng evdev snd_soc_acpi_intel_match snd_soc_acpi iwlmvm snd_hda_intel snd_intel_dspcfg soundwire_intel irqbypass soundwire_generic_allocation drbg ghash_clmulni_intel snd_soc_core rapl mac80211 snd_compress soundwire_cadence snd_hda_codec intel_cstate aes_generic snd_hda_core snd_hwdep intel_uncore libarc4 soundwire_bus pcspkr wmi_bmof intel_wmi_thunderbolt nls_ascii iwlwifi efi_pstore snd_pcm aesni_intel snd_timer nls_cp437 snd iTCO_wdt intel_pmc_bxt iTCO_vendor_support vfat crypto_simd i915 cryptd fat glue_helper watchdog cfg80211 ee1004 soundcore ansi_cprng ecdh_generic ir_rc6_decoder drm_kms_helper ftdi_sio rfkill ecc usbserial libaes mei_me rc_rc6_mce tpm_crb intel_xhci_usb_role_switch cec roles ite_cir mei tpm_tis intel_pch_thermal i2c_algo_bit rc_core tpm_tis_core intel_pmc_core acpi_pad tpm rng_core button drm fuse configfs efivarfs ip_tables x_tables autofs4 ext4 crc16 mbcache jbd2 raid10 raid456 async_raid6_recov async_memcpy async_pq async_xor async_tx xor raid6_pq libcrc32c crc32c_generic raid1 raid0 multipath linear md_mod dm_mod nvme rtsx_pci_sdmmc ahci nvme_core mmc_core libahci xhci_pci libata t10_pi xhci_hcd e1000e scsi_mod crc_t10dif crc32_pclmul ptp crc32c_intel usbcore pps_core crct10dif_generic rtsx_pci crct10dif_pclmul crct10dif_common i2c_i801 i2c_smbus usb_common wmi video ** PCI devices: 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v6/7th Gen Core Processor Host Bridge/DRAM Registers [8086:5904] (rev 02) DeviceName: Onboard -
