Package: checkinstall
Version: 1.5.3-3
Severity: normal

If one just accepts an underscore in an autogenerated package name,
checkinstall finishes with an error about a failed deb creation, when one
looks in the log file, one can maybe get a useful message.
Instead, it would be useful (and, for big packages saving lots of time) if
checkinstall would validate the package name for conformity _before_ building,
or giving the user a second chance to enter a new name instead of having to
repeat the whole build process.

Also, it would be nice if checkinstall wouldn't propose non-working packages
names as default.
