I can't seem to find any mention of "No such file or directory (code 2)"
in the log. It could have gotten eaten by one of those "..." cuting-offs.

On a more general note, you should probably minimize the number of
operations you do in the strace'd gentoo and the time spent in it.
Probably it's best to keep a terminal window handy with a 'killall -9 gentoo'
written, and then when the message comes up, execute that command to destroy
gentoo right there and then. That will likely make the strace log clearer.
