I get the assertions but not the segfault.  Hm.  What this probably means
is that I really need to package the upstream CVS rather than trying to
fix 0.14.3, since the upstream CVS has a bunch of fixes that really need
to be in a new release.

Out of curiosity, does it work any better if you set LC_ALL to C?  I think
our locale settings are the only obvious difference between your system
and mine.
