smartd reports incorrect temperatures for an EIDE hard drive:
$ egrep "hda.*194" /var/log/daemon.log | tail -1

However, hddtemp is able to report a more reasonable value:
$ hddtemp /dev/hda

According to smartctl, this appears to be the 'RAW_VALUE', while smartd
is reporting the 'VALUE':
