I got caught up in a libstdc++6 (TLS) bug, which forced me into
upgrading my kernel to 2.6. When doing this, I spent a little
more time looking at the source trees going into my kernel and
modules. It is entirely possible that the version of ALSA (or
Nvidia) that was effectively being used by my kernel was quite
old. But, since going over to the 2.6 tree (2.6.16-9), the
version of ALSA is now bound into the kernel source, and I've
been keeping the nvidia module up to date as well. I can't say
I've installed a kernel and modules based on 2.6.16-9 yet, but
they are compiled and waiting to be installed. I believe-6 is
what is installed.

All that notwithstanding, the gstreamer engine in amarok only
appears to be marginally more stable than what I was running
under 2.4.27. Something like half a day between crashes.
