Package: chemical-structures
Version: 2.2.dfsg.0-18
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I am in the progress of pushing the efforts about updating jmol forward.
As discussed recently on the mailing list of Debichem-team [0], I would like to
remove the jmol-applet binary package from unstable because it is unmaintained
upstream, the Applet classes are currently deprecated, and at some point in the
future OpenJDK 17 will become the default in Debian ant it will cause jmol to
FTBFS because of the applet part [1].

Everything seems to be ready for the removal, except that chemical-structures
suggests to install jmol-applet alongside it.
Yet, I saw you wrote the patch src~jmol~jmol.js which seems to deactivate the
use of the applet. Thus I think chemical-structures is ready for a removal of
jmol-applet?

Please tell me when you think I can proceed to the removal. If you have some
constraints this is not a problem and it can be postponed a bit, but as we will
have to proceed to the removal one day because of the deprecation of the Java
Applet class, I would appreciate to do it sooner rather than later.

Thanks for your help,

Best regards,
