Charles,
    Thanks for the quick reply.  The issue you are experiencing is most
likely because you are running in a 32-bit user-space on your poewrpc64
system.  Therefore, your DEB_BUILD_ARCH is 'powerpc' instead of 
'powerpc64' and your DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE is 'powerpc-linux-gnu' instead
of 'powerpc64-linux-gnu'.  Until you have a 64-bit user-space available,
I believe you will continue to experience this behavior.  We had similar
issues with the amd64 architecture earlier this year.
