Just a guess, but maybe the db isn't setup right and it ends up with an empty fd list by accident?
Well, whatever the case, it has to be something introduced between 4.4.1-7 and -8, as regressing to 4.4.1-7 works flawlessly. I've not yet dug into the source, as I was more interested in working on the rpmstrap suite script.
