So it seems. I upgraded debianutils on my (otherwise) Debian testing install, and then I could reproduce the build failure for amd64.
I will wait for the debianutils update.
Neither version 5.3-1 nor 5.4-1 of debianutils works. Downgrading to 4.11.2 lets me build successfully again.
I suppose this means that some stuff in the debian/ folder needs to be tweaked. Hopefully you will do that later — it's a bit over my head.
