By adding a "debug=2" line in ~/.mplayer/mplayerplug-in.conf and then starting
Firefox from the command line the following significant error message is
displayed (among many others):

READ: File not found: '/home/username/.mplayer/default.sub'

(where "username" is the actual user name)

Creating an empty file ~/.mplayer/default.sub solves this problem, and movies
play again.

Cheers!
