Or at least only remove it when it is unmodified[1] and do *not* rename it to dpkg-bak when modified. "dpkg-maintscript-helper rm_conffile" doesn't give you this behaviour [2], so you'd have to do it manually.

[1] I *think* the default thinkpad.conf as previously shipped, did not really work out of the box. So removing it when unmodified seems safe. [2] I think such a mode would be useful in dpkg-maintscript-helper. Probaly worth a wishlist bug report against dpkg.
