Hi, I finally managed to investigate this further -- on my server I can now run rageircd with epoll. The result is that the regular non-ssl connections have ping-times that are much smaller (it used to be 1.5 seconds even though the server has 80ms roundtrip time from me), and the ssl connections are now usable too.
I'll stick to epoll, I realise that isn't an option for the debian package since it cannot require kernel 2.6 johannes
