I’ve applied the cherry-pick option from the upstream commit https://github.com/MidnightCommander/mc/commit/fa2cbd2a2c7e38ee56d1756eac5899b57f7f4262.patch to my /etc/mc/mc.ext (with slight hassle due to substitution) and found it improves the situation a lot.
