I don't think there's much point in investigating issues with 32-bit and 16GB RAM - they will be "wontfix" upstream. It's possible that this particular problem has been fixed by an mm change in 4.2, but at the cost of a regression in disk throughput: <https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196157>.
