I am fairly sure that I have subsequently found this problem under plain i386 debian (sarge chroot) as well as AMD64. I currently run with the session saver extension which, now that I have fixed the nameserver I was using, loads (recovers) many pages at once with no problem.

This machine is currently not really running firefox enough to debug this atm, and I can't really risk it to install testing. I'll look into it if I can, and I'm fairly sure other people have experienced this problem, so perhaps they could investigate too. I suppose I could set up a testing chroot?

I'm fairly sure the original problem was a cpu issue - the icewm cpu applet showed it as green, whereas disk-thrashing (eg. kswapd) is normally in dark purple. This machine has 1G ram, and 3G of swap.
