I've just tested this with current xpopple/xpdf running under valgrind in a directory with hundreds of entries, and it seems OK now -- the xpdf code only uses Motif's file dialogue, and it doesn't do anything with directory listings these days. When this bug was reported, xpdf was being linked with Lesstif rather than OpenMotif, so it might have been a Lesstif problem.
