Have you installed any XMMS plugins that might try to use aalib (libaa1)?
Maybe it's useful to send us the listing of ~/.xmms/Plugins

We also expect this error messages to occur only on bad situations, yet XMMS
has this alarmist behaviour. I can't reproduce this error happening in my
machines (rev -5, in Etch and Sid):

1) Run xmms
        -> no error messages

2) Purge aalib1, aalib1-dev

3) Run xmms
        -> no error messages
