I would also like to see a package for Newlib sources. For my case I'm investigating packaging a cross toolchain to build free firmware (carl9170), which uses the SH-2 ISA and requires Newlib.
If that is to be built by a new Debian source package instead of this one, then a newlib-source package is a necessary prerequisite.
