I tried to reproduce this problem and noticed that the problem was due
to the fact that I hada a GD-files from the original Slimserver
package lying around.  The GD.so as distributed in the slimserver
tarball does *not* have the dependency info right, but the Debian
GD.so does have it correct.  So, this is my fault.  Sorry about the
noise.
