Note that this affects mkhfs only. It's still possible to check legacy HFS
filesystems, so fsck.hfs still supports legacy HFS filesystems.

If you want to create a legacy HFS filesystem from Linux, you can just use
"hformat" from the hfsutils package which I will be adopting in the near
future as well (hopefully before the freeze).

I would suggest just hformat from hfsutils your suggested workaround would
cause substantially more work in order to make the packages co-installable.
