Sorry it took so long. Couldn't decide how to tackle this for a while.

This is now the low-effort-but-should-be-good-enough-and-needs-no-new-
upstream-release-variant. I currently have other work in Debian which
I consider more important and more urgent.

I might tackle this differently upstream in the future by e.g. either:

* detecting this situation and writing appropriate suggestions to
  STDERR, or

* detecting this situation and starting the available notification
  daemon automatically.

The latter is probably the most transparent solution, but seems much
harder as it needs knowledge about which notification daemons exist
and how they can be started. And my gut feeling also says this is out
of scope of that project.

Additionally I first need to find a setup where I can easily test that
situation in the first place.

                Regards, Axel
