They did merge, but the bug number should have been the other way around, I think :-) The severity is taken from the first bug, which was "important", but as the package behaves as designed (it's expressly for 64-bit), I'm afraid that "wishlist" remains to be applicable. However, with the positive results of your experiments, perhaps the maintainers are more willing to give the i386 version a try?
