Short version is: We are fully aware gradle in Debian is not up-to-date but it is much more complicated. Did you know that Gradle, a Java build tool, now requires Kotlin to build Java packages? Did you know that in Debian every piece of software is self-contained and we package every dependency independently, so that you don't have to rely on random binary packages from the internet? We need gradle to build packages from source but it is not feasible for us to support all use cases outside of Debian. We encourage you to get involved in Debian. Otherwise there are alternatives like Maven that provide a similar experience for most Java developers but are far easier to maintain. And yes, "we" are a handful of contributors. Regards, Markus
