Betray heißt betrügen, nicht beitragen ;-). Okay, some more debugging questions. The first I already asked, but the answer isn't clear from the bug report: If there is a file .xdvirc in your home directory, please rename it to something else (like xdvirc without the dot), and then run /usr/bin/xdvi i.e. without a filename. Does it also give an error, or does a file open dialog pop up? Second, just for bug housekeeping, what is the output of dpkg -l tex-common tetex-base tetex-bin tetex-extra Finally and most interesting, we repeat the strace call, but now with more clever options: strace -ff -o xdvi.trace /usr/bin/xdvi (or, if a filename is needed to trigger the problem, with some dvi file name added at the end). This will result in three files, one named xdvi.trace, and two more with some number added at the end (xdvi.trace.7889 or the like). Please send us the three files.
