It's difficult to go from a relatively vague symptom to a root cause, but this sounds vaguely similar to a visual bug I have seen intermittently in the past. I would guess that it's either a bug in the compositor, or a bug in GTK. The bug was reported against Debian 9 'stretch', which is no longer supported. Does something similar still happen in Debian 10 'buster'? Please give some specific examples of programs and dialogs that are affected (for example "run file-roller and start to open a file" would be a good example to try). Are you using the GNOME desktop environment, or are you using GNOME programs in a different desktop environment? If you are using the GNOME desktop, is it in X11 mode ("GNOME on Xorg") or in Wayland mode (just "GNOME")? Does the black rectangle coincide with the shape of the dialog box, or is it slightly larger than the dialog box on all sides, or is it the same size as the window in the background? Thanks, smcv
