Where are these font.name and about:config preferences and how do I

In Thunderbird, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Config Editor.
This brings up the about:config window. Type font.name into the find
field and the preferences i mentioned should be visible.
I'm wondering, as has been said, if this is more of a font issue than a
Thunderbird bug. These default about:config preferences in the Debian
package are the same as in the Thunderbird tarball from Mozilla.
Personally, i've always had problems getting URW fonts (supplied by
package gsfonts) to display properly in Firefox and Thunderbird. It
seems fontconfig aliases certain fonts so that, for example, an
application told to display Courier displays Nimbus Mono L. Realiasing
these font families to a font known to display properly (via a local
~/fonts.conf file) is a more general workaround (see
/etc/fonts/fonts.conf) and also resolves the Thunderbird font display issue.
Thanks, changing font.name.monospace.utf-8 from "Courier" to "monospace"
does indeed fix the problem.
As for whether this is a font or a thunderbird issue, I can't say. It
certainly seems to me that having courier show up in the wrong color is
a bug.
