I tried it again today from another machine and also from the original machine and it worked just fine. I'm so sorry to report as a bug something that was so transient.
The odd thing is that I was perfectly able to access the network and login to gmail via my webrowser at the time that I reported the bug. I'll chalk it up to gremlins unless it happens again.
