To add a follow-up to this report - I believe this issue was fixed upstream in release v2.3.9
> - mbox: Seeking in zlib and bzip2 compressed input streams didn't work correctly. I switched from stable's package to a self-built 2.3.10 and it no longer crashes opening the exact same mailboxes.
