sdm doesn't start anything by default. it's a little different from your
typical display manager.

how are you starting sdm?

what sort of environment is this being run in?

this looks like you have sdm-terminal and sdm installed on the same
machine. typically, you would install the sdm package on the application 
server(i.e. your remote server), and install sdm-terminal where you are 
running the X server.

i typically run sdm from /etc/inittab, something like this:

sdm:45:respawn:/usr/sbin/sdm

and in /etc/sdm/sdm.config:

xserver="/usr/bin/X11/X vt9"

if you wanted it on vt9...
