Yep, lists.debian.org is something different lists.alioth.debian.org: * lists.debian.org are mailing lists officially maintained and run by the Debian project. * lists.alioth.debian.org (and its successor alioth-lists.debian.net where the DNS entry points to nowadays) contains bascially lists, any project member could create without any assistance or approval from the Debian project's list masters, i.e. the lists hosted there are "self-service" mailing lists. ("Alioth" previously was Debian's self-service project hosting service. The mailing lists are what is still left from this service.) I must admit that this is anything but obvious, especially for people not directly involved with Debian.
