Hi Benjamin,
despite your perception of the occurences being random, it would be
helpful to have examples if you can't caracterize when the problem
happens at all. You should also try to do the same operations using
apt-get, and report whether similar problems occur. For example, if
installing or removing reportbug can generate this error in synaptic,
try # apt-get install reportbug; or # apt-get remove reportbug;
Also could you give details about synaptic exiting? Does it return 0?
How long do you have to note the error message before it exits?
