This sounds more like the glx alternative is set to mesa-diverted instead of nvidia. And then of course the driver links are not in place. (You can use update-glx to change the settings.) Please run reportbug -N 940926 on the problematic machine to collect a lot of helpful information. Do you have the nvidia-driver meta-package installed?
