First, the default setting in BIOS was to not have any "IOMMU" memory, which caused the hard drive partitioning to fail (the hds were detected, but all write attempts timed out). With IOMMU enabled, the partitioning succeeded, and the system could install and boot. However, after a few hours, one of the RAID-1 disks started timing out, and was removed from the RAID set. I could not get the sata_nv module to work reliably, so I installed a Promise SATA300 TX4 PCI SATA-controller instead, which seems to work fine. The new mdadm support in the installer is a truly Good Thing! Install logs and other status info is available in /var/log/debian-installer/.
