In Debian Buster qemu's -soundhw hda feature is broken. From a guest if you try to play audio it you may hear small bits of it. If you play something with mpv, you will get Alsa XRUN errors. -soundhw ac97 works fine. Guests tested: Debian Buster, Ubuntu 18.04. I previously used this with Debian Stretch and had no issues with -soundhw ac97. Thank you, Teran
