It's how Flatpak apps communicate with anything outside their sandbox (and in particular provides the document portal service that lets their File -> Open and File -> Save As dialogs work as intended, which used to be part of Flatpak but was spun off so that it could be used by other app frameworks). If you are running Flatpak apps, you do need it.

I understand, except I only use Flatpak for us.zoom.Zoom, which works just fine without the process. So it's actually more a Recommends than a Depends.
