You'll have to add "sid" sources, and upgrade only firefox (and any dependencies), and then drop the sid sources (or just use apt pinning).
The "directory missing" case I guess is writing to /nonextant/foo, and is handled gracefully; the "unwritable" case is /home/someoneelse/bar, and doesn't crash here, but also doesn't inform the user that the file wasn't created, which is a slight improvement.
