That might be true, but regardless, it's not true for the version we had
in the archive.

Meh, indeed.  Looks really the maintainer really didn't properly care
about his package enough.

This though does mean that the archive version is not really used
anyway, so…

If anybody wants to re-introduce it with a newer version, compliant with
everything (python3, etc), then please look at
https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/pkgs.en.html#reintroducing-packages
for more details on how to accomplish it.
