Cool.  Yeah the "salvaging" procedure is relatively new and it's gone through a
few revisions over time.  When I had to salvage a package (mumble) in 2014 there
was no process for salvaging a package, so it was a lot more effort to adopt it,
and it took months.  I found out (as I think you have) that sometimes we end up
needing to support software ourselves if we want it to function.

The maintainer replied and he's not against it being adopted (the word "again"
was used, but the context makes it clear it was meant to be "against"), so you
can proceed at any time.
