The initial discussion ended in a big flamewar and the current consensus
seems to be that the intermediary solution (distributing modules as usual
but with a "egg-info" directory) is the best compromise.

There's also the "python-modules" alioth project. We also discussed that
on the list recently (in the same thread in fact).
